European Union hearing in Brussels
2007
From 2 to 4 July, the Eminent Jurists Panel held a regional hearing in Brussels, covering counter-terrorism laws and policies in the European Union and its Member States.
During three days of public hearing, Justice Chaskalson, Robert Goldman, Hina Jilani, Vitit Muntarbhorn, and Raśl Zaffaroni heard evidence from leading lawyers, judges and academics from Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands and Spain, representatives of European governments, European Union and Council of Europe institutions and national and international non-governmental organizations.

The EU hearing was the fifteenth in a series of hearings held around the world by the Panel as part of its global inquiry on the impact of terrorism and counter-terrorism measures on the rule of law, hauman rights and humanitarian law. It was co-organized with the European Policy Center and hosted by Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer.
On 5 July, the Panel held private meetings with representatives of the European Commission, the European Parliament and the German Government (as former President of the EU).
