Arthur CHASKALSON
(South Africa)

Chair of the Panel: Former Chief Justice of South Africa, Arthur Chaskalson has been a leading human rights lawyer during the apartheid period of his country, where he acted as counsel to key human rights cases. This included the Rivonia Trial in 1963-64 when Nelson Mandela and other African National Congress figures were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment. In 1994, Chaskalson was appointed first President of South Africa's new Constitutional Court where he served in this capacity until 2005.
